Pastor John Coger is a godly, humble, caring and dedicated servant. He is the husband to Deaconess Leola Coger and the second son of the Late Rev. Frank and Deaconess Mary Coger. He grew up at the New Hope Temple Baptist Church and has been blessed to serve as senior pastor for the past 31 years.
Under his leadership New Hope has grown spiritually and numerically. Through his enthusiasm, excited energetic example Pastor Coger has inspired many to become involved in what he calls the real work of the church and that is to serve those beyond the church walls. Hence the beginning of a 2 year course of study on Discipleship and community out-reach program that has continued for 22 years.
Denominationally as an involved Pastor he serves as a member of the Executive Committee of The Foreign Mission Board, National Baptist Convention, USA INC. He has represented the board in Barbados and Nicaragua. He has held various positions with the Pennsylvania Baptist Keystone Association also serving for four years as its Vice Moderator At Large.
Pastor Coger affiliated himself with many local and national organizations that provided and continue to provide assistance and resources to the community. In 2000, Pastor Coger served on the Advisory Board, of the Violent Prevention Partnership at Jefferson University Hospital, where he also provided pastoral support to victims of violence in South Central Philadelphia. He served on the Hope VI Task Force and the Developer selection Committee for the planning and redevelopment of the Martin Luther King Plaza (a public housing development located near his church). In 2001 he began a two-year term as the South Phila. Community Impact Director for the Amachi Program, a mentoring program for children of prisoners. Expanding his work in this area, he began working more directly with Dr. W. Wilson Goode Sr. in the Amachi Training Institutes, where others came locally, nationally and internationally to learn how to replicate this work.
Pastor Coger is a lover of children and a strong supporter of the children of his congregation and community. As a concerned and passionate Pastor, he is often seen going in and out of the neighboring schools or spending time one on one with those in need who knock on his door.
Pastor John Coger has a heart after the people, and understands the commission given him to spread the Gospel of Christ throughout all nations through evangelizing, teaching and preaching the Word of God. He is very serious about what he does for the master and has always given God the glory for all that he enables him to do. His Passion is to, “work the works of him that sent (him), while it is day: the night cometh, when no man can work.
